NFL will change up draft day, less down time

April 4, 2008 By admin Leave a Comment

Who will be this year's #1 pick. More importantly, how about #2 and #5 If you’re a big fan of the NFL draft, they’re making some changes for the event on April 26th and 27th that should improve your overall viewing pleasure.

The draft will not begin three hours later, starting on Saturday April 26th at 2pm.  In addition to a later start time, teams will have ten minutes in between first round picks instead of fifteen and seven minutes in between picks in the 2 nd round as opposed to ten.

In a story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Rams head coach Scott Linehan said that if there was any potential trade talks when a team is ready to pick, the phone won’t ring until about five minutes before the pick, so Linehan was basically saying that ten minutes is pretty much a waste of time.

Because of the later start, only the first two rounds will take place on the first day.  Again, as a fan, you’re seeing the bigger names come up to the podium and with more frequency.

As far as teams are concerned, Linehan says after the first two rounds, this will allow teams to re-examine who has been taken and who is still left for the third through seven rounds of the draft.
