More bad news for northwest Missouri’s entry in the National Spelling Bee. Not only is regional winner Morgan Brown ineligible, it seems the runner-up is not eligible either.

The Scripps-Howard organization has a new rule this year that says the student’s school has to be specifically enrolled in the spelling bee program. Morgan Brown’s school district paid the enrollment fee but the rules require each school with entrants to pay the fee.

The same rule appears to have tripped up second-place finisher Taylor Washburn, whose Harrison County district has two schools house in one building. But her school did not specifically enroll in the spelling bee.
