Abraham Lincoln visited Missouri several times and relatives of his wife’s family lived here. Missouri didn’t give him much support when he was elected President. But this is an official state holiday anyway, meaning state offices are closed. Two of his cabinet members were from Missouri, the first cabinet officers from west of the Mississippi. Maybe that’s why. Of course, George Washington didn’t get within several hundred miles of Missouri and Monday is another holiday, in his honor.
