A tractor-trailer carrying diesel fuel flipped on its side Tuesday afternoon trying to round a tight curve on a major highway in Jefferson City. Sparks emitted as the truck slid on the pavement, setting fuel that had spilled on fire, sending a dense, black plume of smoke over the city. The driver is dead. His identity has not been revealed.

Officials worried the fire would create an even more dangerous situation. A nearby school was evacuated as more than 30 firefighters worked to douse the flames and contain the blaze.

State transportation officials closed an overpass heavily damaged by the fire until it can be repaired.
