Ethics Commission Approves Plan to Address Excess Contributions

November 8, 2007 By admin Leave a Comment

The Missouri Ethics Commission has made a decision on how to proceed with the August 27th State Supreme Court ruling that struck down a new campaign financing law and reinstituted the previous contribution limits.

Executive Director Bob Connor says the Commission will notify all campaign committees and candidates that have taken money in excess of the limits that they might be in violation of the law. The committees that are notified will then have the option of returning the excess campaign contributions or claiming a hardship in doing so. Opting for the hardship route will lead to a hearing before the Commission, with Commission members then deciding how to proceed.

In all, 166 candidates or committees have received money in excess of the limits.  Hearings for those who claim hardship could be scheduled through February of next year.
