Missing Lee’s Summit Man Alive and Well

October 15, 2007 By admin Leave a Comment

A Lee’s Summit man who had been missing since Saturday afternoon in a remote area of Eagle County, Colorado, has been found alive.

23-year-old Jacob Gately and his brother, Josh, were hiking down the summit of the Mount of the Holy Cross on Saturday when they were separated.Authorities were alerted when Jacob did not return to the campsite where he was supposed to meet up with his brother.

Shannon Cordingly with the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office says a search and rescue effort was launched with 11 volunteers, a dog, and a helicopter looking for the Missouri man. And, he was found, suffering only from frostbitten toes. Cordingly says authorities have learned the man kept himself warm by starting a campfire with a lighter he had brought with him. She says that while Gately is an experienced hiker, he was not prepared for hiking in Colorado at this time of year. He did not have water and was not dressed appropriately for the weather.
