The Committee for Educational Equality, the coalition of more than 200 schools challenging the constitutionality of Missouri’s school funding formula, will soon have to decide whether to move the challenge to the State Supreme Court.

Committee Chairman Jeff Lindsey, Superintendent of the Van Buren R-1 School District, says it was thought all along that this case would end up in the Supreme Court, and the superintendents are going to discuss going in that direction.

Cole County Circuit Judge Richard Callahan has already rejected the Committee’s claim that the funding formula is inadequate and unequal. He is expected to decide, perhaps next week, on the plaintiffs’ claim that the state is failing to put at least 25 percent of state revenues into public schools, as is required under the Missouri Constitution.
