Alfonso Soriano belted a 2 run home run in the top of the 8 th inning to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the first game of a day/night doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Busch Stadium.

Jim Edmonds drove in both runs for the Redbirds.

St. Louis starter Braden Looper pitched 7 innings, allowing just 1 earned run on 3 hits. He was not involved in the decision. Ryan Franklin (4-4), who relieved Looper, gave up 2 earned runs in an inning of work to take the loss. Kerry Wood (1-1) pitched a perfect inning out of the bullpen to pick up the win. Ryan Dempster tossed 1 perfect inning for his 27 th save.
