The St. Louis Cardinals came storming back from an early 3-0 deficit to score 10 straight runs en route to a 12-4 trouncing of the Brewers Tuesday night at Miller Park in Milwaukee.
The Redbirds’ 19 hit performance moves the team to within 4 ½ games of the National League Central Division leading Brew Crew. There were numerous hitting heroes on this night, none more important than Jim Edmonds, who belted out 4 hits in 6 trips to the plate, driving in 3 runs. Ryan Ludwick, Yadier Molina, and starting pitcher Kip Well all played roles in the hit parade, each driving in a pair of RBIs.
The long ball did not figure in any of the Cardinal scoring. Such was not the case for Milwaukee, which got all 4 of its runs going deep. Prince Fielder belted his 37 th , Geoff Jenkins slammed his 17 th – a 2-run blast, and Ryan Braun smacked his 23 rd .
Wells (6-13) pitched 6 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits, striking out 5 to get the win. Chris Capuano (5-10) was chased in a Cardinals 6 run explosion in the 5 th inning. He gave up 7 runs, 6 of them earned, in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss.
The Cards (56-60) and the Brewers (62-57) continue what is being called a "must win" series for the Redbirds Wednesday night at Miller Park. Joel Pineiro (2-2) goes to the mound for St. Louis against Milwaukee’s Yovani Gallardo (4-2).
