A federal district judge says the Farmington school district correctly suspended a student for wearing a shirt bearing the Confederate flag.

Student Bryce Archambo, who was 14 at the time, was suspended for a day. He had argued he was wearing the shirt as a symbol of his Southern heritage, not for any racial reasons. But the judge says the teenager’s interpretation of the flag is irrelevant in light of previous court rulings that recognize the flag as racially divisive. The ruling says school officials must have the flexibility to control the tenor and contours of student expression within the school.
