The Kansas City Chiefs open their 2007 preseason schedule with a 16-12 loss at the hands of the Browns in Cleveland.

The Browns struck first on a Phil Dawson 27 yard field goal that capped a 49 yard drive in the 1 st quarter. In the 2 nd quarter, Dawson hit another field goal, this time from 38 yards out to finish a 30 yard drive.

The Chiefs got on the board in the 2 nd quarter, with the defense coming up big. Defensive back Benny Sapp picked up a fumble and returned the ball 56 yards for a touchdown. Rookie kicker Justin Medwick converted to give Kansas City a 7-6 lead. That’s how the 1 st half ended.

Cleveland moved back on top in the 3 rd quarter on Justin Medwick’s third field goal, a 32 yarder, that made the score 9-7.

In the 4 th quarter, the Chiefs picked up a safety to tie the game, then moved ahead with a Medwick field goal. But Kansas City’s special teams couldn’t nail down the victory. Chris Barclay ran back the kickoff 88 yards for the major, and Dawson booted the extra point to give the Browns the 16-12 win.

Rookie quarterback Casey Printers was 8 for 17 for a total of 64 yards. Brodie Croyle completed 5 of 8 passes for 49 yards. Damon Huard completed 2 passes in 4 attempts for 19 yards.

The Chiefs’ next game on the exhibition schedule is next Thursday, when the host the Miami Dolphins at Arrowhead Stadium.
