New York Yankees’ slugger Alex Rodriguez hit his 500 th career home run to lead the Bronx Bombers to a 16-8 trouncing of the Kansas City Royals Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. The Yanks pounded out 21 hits, including 3 from A-Rod, whose 500 th career roundtripper, his 36 th of the season, came with two men on in the bottom of the 1 st inning. Bobby Abreu also homered for New York, hitting his 11 th in the 6 th inning.

David DeJesus belted his 6 th homer of the year for the Royals. He went 2 for 4 on the day with 3 runs batted in. Ross Gload went 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs.

Mike Myers (3-0) earned the win, pitching only 1/3 of an inning in relief of Yankees’ starter Phil Hughes, who was chased after giving up 6 earned runs on 7 hits in 4 2/3 innings. John Bale (0-1) gave up 2 earned runs on 5 hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief to take the loss.

The Royals (48-61) and the Yankees (60-50) close out their three game weekend series Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. Gil Meche (7-8) tries to salvage a game for the Royals against New York’s Mike Mussina (6-7).
