The St. Louis Cardinals scored 2 runs in the 1 st inning and 4 in the 2 nd for all the scoring in the game as they shut out the Florida Marlins 6-0 Wednesday night at Dolphin Stadium in Miami.

The big story of the game was the superb pitching performance by St. Louis starter Kip Wells (4-12), who threw 8 scoreless innings, allowing only 2 hits, striking out 4 batters for the win.

Juan Encarnacion had a big night at the plate, going 3 for 4 with 3 runs batted in. So Taguchi went 2 for 4 with a couple of RBIs. David Eckstein, Albert Pujols, and Brendan Ryan each added a pair of hits.

Dontrelle Willis (7-9) gave up all 6 runs on 11 hits in 3 innings to take the loss.

The Cards (43-48) take 2 of the 3 games in the series. They move onto Atlanta to open a four game series with the Braves Thursday night at Turner Field. Mike Maroth (5-4) goes to the mound for the Redbirds against Atlanta’s Tim Hudson (9-5).
