The Kansas City Royals pounded out 13 hits on the way to a 9-3 thrashing of the Boston Red Sox Tuesday night at Fenway Park.

Alex Gordon went 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored. Tony Pena had 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, with a pair of runs batted in. John Buck and Billy Butler each drove in 2 runs. Mark Grudzielanek, with a pair of hits and Ross Gload with a hit each contributed an RBI.

Kansas City pitcher Leo Nunez, making his debut as a starter, was not involved in the decision. He went 4 innings, giving up 1 earned run on 6 hits, while striking out 3. Jimmy Gobble (4-1) pitched 2/3 of an inning, striking out 1 batter, to pick up the win. Boston starter Tim Wakefield (10-9) pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing 6 earned runs on 9 hits to take the loss.

The Royals (40-53) and the Red Sox (56-37) wrap up their series Wednesday night at Fenway Park. Odalis Perez (4-8) goes to the mound for the Royals against Boston’s Julian Tavarez (5-7) in the rubber game of the series.
