The St. Louis Cardinals failed to take advantage of scoring opportunities as they were shut out 4-0 by the Florida Marlins Tuesday night at Dolphin Stadium in Miami.

The Cardinals hammered out 7 hits, put 10 runners on base, but failed to cash in any of them. The Marlins scored a run in the 3 rd , then gave themselves some breathing room when Hanley Ramirez belted a 2-run homer in the 5 th to make the score 3-0. Florida picked up 1 more run in the 7 th to end the night’s scoring.

Rick Vanden Hurk (3-2) pitched 5 innings for the win, allowing just 5 hits and striking out 6 Redbirds. Brad Thompson (6-4) took the loss, giving up 3 earned runs on 7 hits in 6 innings of work.

The Cardinals (42-48) and the Marlins (45-49) close out their series Wednesday night in Miami. Kip Wells (3-12) takes to the mound for the Cards against Dontrelle Willis (7-8) for the Fish.
