One of these days you might be driving on your roof.

The Missouri Department of Transportaiton is recycling old roofing shingles by mixing them into asphalt. MoDOT says the mix produces a durable, more rut-resistant asphalt and a lower price.

The agency says the mixture saves three-to-five dollars per ton of asphalt. A typical resurfacing project uses about 30-thousand tons of asphalt.

The Department of Natural Resources estimates almost 150-thousand tons of old asphalt shingles go into landfills every year.
