Missouri’s new law letting lay midwives deliver babies in Missouri has been challenged in court by the Missouri Medical Association. The lawsuit says the bill was improperly drawn because it has too many unrelated topics in it, which would be a violation of the state constitution. The lawsuit says the bill was about health insurance and an amendment legalizing the activities of lay midwives has no relationship to that issue. The lawsuit also says the law does not require the midwives to have state licenses, which jeopardizes the health and safety of patients.
