The Philadelphia Phillies took the rubber game of their weekend series with the St. Louis Cardinals, downing the Redbirds 5-1 Sunday afternoon at Busch Stadium.

The series finale included a pair of rain delays, halting proceedings for nearly two hours. Once play resumed for good the Phillies scored 3 runs in the 8 th inning to snap a 1-1 tie. The Phils added a run in the 9 th to provide a four run cushion.

Brian Sanchez (1-0) pitched a pair of hitless, scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory. Brad Thompson (5-3) gave up 3 earned runs in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss.

The Cardinals (33-39) travel to New York to begin a series with the Mets Monday night. The recently acquired Mike Maroth (5-2) goes to the mound for the Redbirds against the Mets Jorge Sosa (6-3).
