Emergency officials throughout the state begin a three-day drill today to prepare for the possibility of a very large and damaging earthquake.

Public Safety Director Mark James says the drill will reflect reality in that communications will be among the first casualties of the quake. The drill begins with the immediate reaction to the massive quake, moves to activities that would take place hours and days later, and then concludes with reactions taking place in the weeks and months following a quake.

State and about 85 local and county emergency officials throughout the state are taking part in this three-day earthquake preparedness drill, which calls for reaction to a 7.7 magnitude tremor.
