Hancock Drunk at Time of Fatal Crash

May 4, 2007 By admin Leave a Comment

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock, who was killed in a car crash early Sunday morning in St. Louis, was legally drunk at the time of the accident when he slammed into a tow truck. St. Louis Chief Medical Examiner Doctor Michael Graham says Hancock’s blood alcohol level was well above the legal limit – more than twice the legal limit, in fact.

Furthermore, St. Louis Police Chief Joe Mokwa says a quantity of marijuana was found in Hancock’s Ford Explorer – 8.55 grams of marijuana, along with a glass pipe used to smoke marijuana.

Hancock was not wearing his seatbelt at the time, but Doctor Graham doubts it would have made much of a difference in this particular case.

St. Louis Cardinals General Manager Walt Jocketty says there was no indication that Hancock had a problem with alcohol. He adds this is a wake up call to all players about the decisions they make.

Cardinals President Mark Lamping says the team has personnel policies in place but the Cardinals will do what it takes to avoid tragedies like this one in the future.
