We’re still a little over a year and a half away from the 2008 presidential election, but Governor Matt Blunt and House Speaker Rod Jetton (R-Marble Hill) are already taking sides in the Republican race. They’re supporting former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney .
Blunt praises Romney as a proven problem solver, someone who is successful in business, and the person who took control of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics when the Games were facing big financial and organizational problems.
Blunt adds Romney, as Governor of Massachusetts – one of the most Democratic states in the country – stood firm for what Blunt calls Missouri values: conservative beliefs, fiscal discipline, and traditional marriage. Blunt says he and other Republicans will be working to win the GOP Presidential nomination for Romney, but Blunt can’t say how formal that role will be.
Not all leading Missouri Republicans are on board. Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder, for instance, would like to see former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson enter the race for the White House.
