St. Louis County Judge Melvyn W. Wiesman ordered a new trial for Kevin Johnson after a hung jury stalled sentencing. Johnson’s jury heard the defendant’s admission of guilt in the murder of Kirkwood Police Sergeant William McEntee in July of 2005, but it deadlocked between sentencing Johnson with first- or second-degree murder.

Judge Wiesman pulled each individual juror to ask them if there’s any reasonable belief that the jury could reach a unanimous verdict in the Kevin Johnson trial and finally concluded there was not.

St. Louis county prosecutor Bob McCulloh says all available evidence will be used in the retrial.  McCulloh says it could be fall before the case makes it back to court.
