It was close, but Kansas City voters have chosen a former city auditor as their next mayor.

Mark Funkhouser has defeated Alvin Brooks by a mere one thousand votes, garnering 50.6 percent of the votes cast to 49.4 percent for Brooks. It was quite a victory for Funkhouser, who had experience in city government, but had never run for public office. Brooks was a two-term city councilmember.
