Low income Missourians are being reminded about a federal program that could return more money than was paid in taxes.

Michael Devine, Internal Revenue Service Media Relations Specialist for Missouri & Kansas, says the Earned Income Tax Credit is specifically designed for those who do not make a lot of money. The Tax Credit can be as much as $4,536 depending on income and family size.

It was created in 1975, in part to offset the burden of Social Security taxes and as a work incentive. It helps low income working families to get improve their lives and to move up the economic ladder.

Last year, more than 429,000 Missourians received almost $800-Million in EITC money. Generally, those making less than $39,000 a year could be eligible for the Tax Credit.
