The Internal Revenue Service is making taxpayers aware of a deduction that thousands of Missourians who have filed have not claimed. It’s the Telephone Excise Tax Refund.

Michael Devine, an IRS media relations specialist for Missouri and Kansas, says this is a three percent tax on long-distance calls going back to the Spanish American War. The courts decided the tax should no longer be charged, so the refunds have been ordered.

The Refund can be claimed on the actual taxes paid between March of 2003 and July of 2006. Anyone who doesn’t have 41 months worth of phone bills to refer to can request a standard amount – depending on the number of exemptions claimed – to obtain this refund from Uncle Sam.
