Former Kansas City Athletics player and manager Hank Bauer died today after a battle with cancer. He was 84.
Bauer played the outfield for 14 years in the Majors, two in Kansas City. During his playing career, Bauer won nine pennants and seven World Series championships with the New York Yankees from 1948-1959. He made several appearances in the All-Star game and finished with a .277 career batting average.
Bauer spent eight years as a manager with the Athletics (both Kansas City and Oakland) and the Baltimore Orioles. He was named American League Manager of the Year twice with the Orioles in 1964 and 1966. Bauer managed the ’66 Orioles to a sweep of the Dodgers in the World Series.
He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1993.
