Weaver Heads for Seattle

January 27, 2007 By admin Leave a Comment

Money talks and ?the rest? walks. That was the message sent from free agent pitcher Jeff Weaver to the Cardinals. Trying for a consecutive World Series title and playing in one of baseball?s best cities was peanuts compared to the Mariners contract offer of more than $8 million. Weaver took the money, agreeing with Seattle on a deal that will pay him a guaranteed base salary of $8.325 million plus some appearance incentives that could bring Weaver another $1 million.

The Cardinals were very interested in retaining Weaver?s services, but were offering a more incentive-laced contract.

The deal returns Weaver back to the American League West. He was acquired by the Cardinals in July of last year as part of a trade with Angels. Weaver played a key role in the Redbirds postseason run to the championship. Weaver becomes the third pitcher from St. Louis? World Series rotation to sign elsewhere. Jeff Suppan and Jason Marquis both decided to sign with other teams. Chris Carpenter and Anthony Reyes are the only two starters to remain with the team.
