The elderly won’t be on their own on the road in 2007. The state Department of Transportation is kicking off a year-long initiative to increase older driver safety. Spokesman Laura Halloway says 16% of fatal traffic crashes and 13% of serious injury accidents involve older drivers. Halloway says part of this can come from drivers having to adjust to changes in vision, mobility and reflexes changes as they get older. She says MoDOT’s initiative is meant to help drivers adjust to those changes. MoDOT is working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the American Society on Aging in it’s initiative that’s focused in five core cities – Columbia, Kansas City, Springfield, St. Louis and Cape Girardeau.
