One of the state’s leading business groups has released its wish list for the coming session of the General Assembly. Associated Industries of Missouri wants tax reform, incentives for small businesses to offer health insurance to employees, and correcting problems with Missouri’s Second Injury Fund, which compensates injured employees when a current work-related injury combines with a prior disability to create an increased combined disability. AIM President Gary Marble says one of the major problems confronting small business is Proposition B, the minimum wage increase that was approved by voters in November. He wants a legislative committee set up to study the impact of the cost of living increases in the minimum wage law. The initiative approved by voters raises the minimum wage from $5.15 to $6.50 an hour on January 1st, with future increases tied to the cost of living. Marble says that while the increase to $6.50 is bearable, the indexing could be very problematic for businesses and the economy.
