Legislation aimed at bringing about what its sponsors call a “genuine ban on human cloning” has been announced as joint resolution to be taken up by the new session of the General Assembly that begins in January. Senate sponsor Matt Bartle of Lee’s Summit and Representative Jim Lembke of St. Louis are the co-sponsors. The proposal calls for the Legislature to approve placing a measure on the November, 2008 ballot – a measure that would, in effect, take out much of the language approved by voters in November’s Amendment 2 – the stem cell research initiative. That initiative allows Missouri scientists to conduct any research allowed under federal law. Bartle and Lembke are touring the state today to promote their idea. The first stop was the State Capitol in Jefferson City. They are also appearing in Chesterfield, Cape Girardeau, Springfield, and Kansas City.
