The state accuses a Callaway County man of failing to clean up an illegal waste tire dump in Callaway County and of ignoring an order to quit burning tires there. Richard Schneider has been jailed for contempt of court. The state filed its first legal action against Schneider 15 months ago. Last April, a judge ordered Schneider to get rid of the tires, stop burning them, and get rid of a 55-gallon drum of hazardous materials at the site near Auxvasse. Members of the Attorney General’s staff and Department of Natural Resources officials visited the site in late November and found four tire fires and one-thousand scrap tires. Schneider will stay in jail until he complies with that April court order.
