As the the state’s largest electric utility works to restore power to customers still in the dark following last week’s Winter storm, some customers are finding out additional repairs might be needed – additional repairs that will have to be paid for by the customer. At issue are cases in which downed power lines are to blame for the outages. Susan Gallagher with Ameren – the state’s largest electric utility – says that while electric companies are responsible for electric utility poles and the main overhead wires, the smaller wires that connect a customer to the main wire or pole are the responsibility of the business or homeowner. Gallagher says that while Ameren crews will take a look at a customer’s meter base or attachment point to see whether there is damage, but if there is the customer must call an electrical contractor to make repairs.
