The city of Columbia has banned smoking in public buildings. That includes restaurants and bars. The new ordinance goes into effect January 9th. The ban also covers sports stadiums, bingo halls, nursing homes, city-owned buildings and other public places. The Missouri Restaurant Association says the city is intruding into private business. Proponents say the ordinance is a health issue.
