While the Royals won’t make the playoffs this year, and may not for the next few generations, they are doing their best to play the role of spoiler. KC blasted three home runs in the top of the 11th inning to knock off the Tigers in Detroit 9-7.

The comeback win took awhile to materialize. Kansas City found themselves down 5-0 early, but with two runs in the fifth, and one in each of the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, they found themselves tied and headed for extra frames.

After Emil Brown and Paul Phillips both went deep, Jeff Keppinger capped the Royals’ scoring by adding a two-run shot of his own. Joel Peralta got the last two outs in the bottom half of the eleventh to earn his first save on the year.

Zack Greinke, recently recalled from Class Double-A Wichita, picked up his first victory of the season.
