Albert Pujols is destined to have his career shortened if he has to continuously carry the Cardinals on his shoulders. Luckily for St. Louis, Pujols seems perfectly able to do the job and he came through again in a 4-2 win over the Padres Wednesday.

Pujols hit a go-ahead three-run homer with two outs in the eighth to rescue the Cardinals from a seven game losing skid. St. Louis’ lead in the National League Central dropped to 1.5 games during that time. The Cardinals only managed four hits in the contest, three by Pujols.

Cardinals starter Anthony Reyes was effective on the mound giving up one run on five hits through six innings. Tyler Johnson got the win, while Adam Wainright struck out two batters in the ninth for the save.
