There is no end, in sight, to the rift in Washington, D.C., over what can and cannot be done by U.S. intelligence officials interrogating detainees suspected of terrorist activities. And, Senator Kit Bond says that while talks involving the White House and U.S. Senate officials are ongoing, a deal is not imminent. At issue is legislation to authorize the creation of special military commissions to try suspected terrorists and how intelligence operatives must treat detainees. Several Republican Senators have joined Senate Democrats expressing concerns that the White House proposal might violate the torture components of the Geneva Conventions. Bond wants U.S. interrogators to have a lot of latitude, but insists torture will not be tolerated.
