It wasn’t the best way to end the season, but nothing would’ve made it feel any better. Royals third baseman Mark Teahen knew before the first pitch of Tuesday’s game with the Yankees that it’d be his last of the year.

Teahen is set to have season-ending shoulder surgery Friday to fix the labrum in his right shoulder.

“It’s a real tough time to walk away from it because I’m playing well, the team is playing well, and we’ve been playing well against some real good opponents,” said Teahen.

The Royals did send Teahen off with a 5-0 win, but it was bittersweet since he went hitless in four at-bats. For the year, he finished with a .290 batting average and a team-leading 18 home runs.

Esteban German and Jeff Keppinger will replace Teahen at third base.
