State Treasurer Sarah Steelman says veterans went the extra mile to serve this country, and now it’s time the state went the extra mile to return to them their property. She has announced a new program her office is running called “Operation Extra Mile” that tries to get unclaimed property back into the hands of veterans or their surviving families. Steelman says her office is using a database from the Missouri Veterans Commission to obtain names. And Steelman says, so far, out of the 36,000 veterans checked, her office has found about 2,600 matches of vets who might have property held by the state. Officials admit this only covers veterans on whom the State Veterans Commission has information, but efforts are being made to tap into federal databases to get those who might have moved out of state. In the meantime, anyone, veteran or not, who believes he or she might have some unclaimed property out there is encouraged to check the Treasurer’s web site at www.showmemoney.com.
