Scoring 10 runs in the first inning, leading 10-1, and still managing to lose the game can send any team in a downward spiral. That’s the situation the Royals faced after losing game two of their three game series with the Indians. Kansas City proved it would be hard to overcome.

Victor Martinez and Andy Garko hit back-to-back homers in the ninth inning. Ambiorix Burgos surrendered the homers on consecutive pitches. Cleveland only led 5-4 after seven, but scored four runs in the final two innings, pulling away for an 8-4 victory.

Marte and Jhonny Peralta each had three hits.

Mike Sweeney recorded three hits and three RBI for the Royals. First baseman Ryan Shealy chipped in with three hits as well.

C.C. Sabathia earned his ninth win of the year allowing four runs – three earned – on 11 hits in eight innings.

Reliever Jimmy Gobble took the loss after three innings of one-run ball.
