The University of Missouri held its first intra-squad scrimmage, Monday. The offense walked away the winner, but both sides of the ball played well. Several position depths will be determined after the coaches review the tapes. One thing is for certain, head coach Gary Pinkel determined the search for a starting quarterback is over.
Chase Daniel is the No. 1 guy. Daniel completed 16 of 20 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns during the scrimmage. He connected on 10 of his final 11 passes, including a stretch where he hit on nine straight. He’s been the most consistent of all the competitors for the job. There is still some controversy at the position however. Chase Patton and Brandon Coleman are battling for the backup role. Neither has walked away with a clear cut advantage. Patton has the stronger arm but lacks consistency. Coleman, a senior, has also failed to make plays on a day-to-day basis. Both quarterbacks threw touchdowns in the scrimmage.
Preseason All-Big 12 safety David Overstreet didn’t participate. His surgically repaired knee swelled up five days into camp and he’s being held out for precaution. Running back Marcus Woods was also held out of the workout, he still has a cast on his foot protecting a strained Achilles tendon. Cornerback Trenile Washington fractured his ankle during the scrimmage. He’s expected to miss six to eight weeks.
