Burgos Blows Another Late Lead

August 12, 2006 By admin Leave a Comment

Ambiorix Burgos blew his 11th save of the year, as the Royals gave up three runs in the ninth and lost to the Indians 4-3.

The game produced 21 hits in all, but neither team was able to score many runs. Both teams combined to leave 14 runners on base. Kansas City scored a run in the first inning, and two more in the fifth, taking a 3-0 lead. Cleveland closed the gap to 3-1 with a score in the sixth.

The score remained 3-1 going into the ninth, and the Royals had received some good pitching up to that point. Starter Adam Bernero held the Tribes offense to one run in 5.2 innings. Relievers Joel Peralta and Jimmy Gobble combined for 2.1 shutout innings.

Then, Burgos was called to the mound. It looked fine early, as he was able to retire the first batter, Jhonny Peralta. But it turned bad quickly. Ryan Garko and Ramon Vazquez reached on back-to-back singles. The next batter, Aaron Boone, walked to load the bases. Up came Grady Sizemore, who already had 1-hit in the game. Sizemore worked a 2-1 count before belting a three-run triple and winning the game for the Indians.
