The Missouri Farm Bureau FARM-PAC holds its traditional “meet the candidates” event, giving incumbent Republican Jim Talent and Democratic Challenger Claire McCaskill the opportunity to speak to farmers. Talent did his part, but McCaskill declined to attend the event. She says she was unable to fit the event into her schedule, adding the Farm Bureau wouldn’t support her, anyway, because in her opinion it is a Republican organization. Missouri Farm Bureau President Charlie Kruse rejects McCaskill’s claim that the organization does the bidding of the Republican Party. He says members support candidates who support rural issues, and if the Republican candidate is seen as the person who can best represent farm interests … so be it. Kruse says the process of deciding who to support rests solely on where the candidates stand on farm issues.
