Senator Kit Bond wants to charge government officials who leak classified information to reporters. Bond has filed legislation that would tighten restrictions on the amount and type of information that could be revealed to reporters. The Bond proposal would cover current or former government employees and civilian contractors who leak information that the government has classified. Those found in violation would spend up to three years in jail and pay a fine. No provision is included to punish the news media for broadcasting the information. Bond says there’s nothing like an orange jumpsuit on a deliberate leaker to discourage others from going down that path.
