A changing of the guard in St. Louis—- The National Guard Unit that has been providing the bulk of the Guard presence during storm cleanup is heading home this weekend, replaced with another unit. The Guard’s Captain Tammy Spicer says the summer training period for the 1140th Engineering Battalion is running out. That organization is heading home after more than a week in St. Louis and will be replaced by more than 200 members of the 203rd Engineer Battalion based in Joplin. The Cape Girardeau unit will go home tomorrow. Spicer says more than half of the 26 National Guard units that have supplied personnel to the St. Louis area has been engineer or military police units. She says the MPs were brought in for health and wellness checks, and for the distribution of water. She says the MPs also have Humvees which can more easily get through city streets than the larger vehicles other units use. The National Guard has provided about 400 people for cleanup and relief work since the first storm hit St. Louis on July 19. A second storm caused more damage two days later. The Governor is releasing some soldiers from ongoing service in St. Louis. Starting Sunday, the 203rd will provide the lion’s share of soldiers and airmen remaining in St. Louis.
