It was almost déjà vu for the Royals and Red Sox. The two teams battled through a second straight pitcher’s duel and a consecutive BoSox 1-0 win, Wednesday.
Mark Redman and Josh Beckett faced off on the mound to see who could make the least amount of costly mistakes. In the end, it was Redman who gave up a solo home run to Manny Ramirez in the fourth inning that proved to be the difference. Outside of Ramirez’ fatal blow, Redman was showing everyone why he deserved to be on the American League All-Star team, pitching a complete game giving up seven hits and striking out nine.
Beckett was more than up to the task. One day after Boston rookies Jon Lester and Jonathan Papelbon combined to one-hit the Royals, Beckett earned his 12th win of the year with a four-hit shutout in eight innings. Papelbon came on again in the ninth to get the save.
