Jon Lester remained undefeated at 5-0 and Jonathan Papelbon earned his major league-leading 28th save of the year as the two young rookies combined to 1-hit the Royals in a 1-0 win for the Red Sox.

Lester pitched eight innings of one-hit ball – a Mark Teahen single in the second inning – before giving way to a dominating Papelbon.

The lone run of the game came on an Alex Gonzalez RBI single in the fifth.

Lester’s performance overshadowed his counterpart Brandon Duckworth who pitched equally as well. Duckworth’s only blemish was the run he allowed in the fifth inning. He left the game after six innings, giving up the lone run and five hits.

Kansas City lost for the seventh time in eight games after winning four in a row. Five of those losses have been by two runs or less.
