Joey Gathright enjoyed his best game as a Royal driving in four runs as Kansas City beat the Tigers 9-6, Sunday.

Once again, the Royals built an early lead. Only this time, they were able to keep it. Kansas City went up 4-1 after three innings and kept the pressure on combining for five runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.

The Tigers didn’t go down easily getting two home runs from Marcus Thames and one from Carlos Guillen.

But the Royals had just enough pitching to pull out their first win against the Tigers in 12 games this year. Starter Scott Elarton gave up three runs on three hits in six innings. Elmer Dessens gave up three runs in his inning of work, Ambiorix Burgos pitched a scoreless eighth, and closer Mike MacDougal, just called up from AAA Omaha, pitched a perfect ninth to get the save.
