For the third game in a row, the Cardinals gave fans a little extra for their money. Three straight games have seen the Redbirds win in extra innings. Albert Pujols rescued St. Louis for the second time in three games with a walk-off home run in the 14th inning to give the Cardinals a 3-2 win.

Pujols’ league leading 30th home run ended a game that was ironically a pitcher’s duel. Before Odalis Perez served up Pujols’ dinger, five Dodger pitchers combined to give up two runs in 13 innings. Starter Chad Billingsley went five shutout innings giving up six hits and striking out four. Giovanni Carrara, Jonathan Broxton, Joe Beimel, and Takashi Saito each pitched two innings with Carrara the only reliever to allow a run. He actually gave up two runs on a game-tying homer to Jim Edmonds.

Redbirds’ starter Jason Marquis pitched well enough to get a win. He lasted eight innings giving up two runs on six hits. Braden Looper, the last of five relievers for St. Louis, gave up a hit before earning the win.
