The marriage between the Cardinals and Sidney Ponson never panned out the way both sides thought it would. Ponson was supposed to be the replacement to Matt Morris who left in free-agency for San Francisco. That plan was never executed as Ponson reluctantly bounced between the starting rotation and the bullpen.
In 14 appearances, Ponson recorded a 4-4 record with a 5.24 ERA, not exactly Morris numbers. The righthander was designated for assignment Friday, and is expected to clear waivers today. He can be claimed off waivers by any team that’s willing to accept his $1 million salary. If Ponson goes without being claimed, he’ll become a free agent.
Ponson doesn’t expect to be unemployed for long, the Yankees and Red Sox have showed interest in him and could offer him a deal if he clears waivers.
