The Royals closer position has been as up and down as the team’s season so far, with mostly downs. Ambiorix Burgos held the position and has come on strong since struggling early on. He has 14 saves in 22 tries. Elmer Dessens filled in while Burgos found his touch again. Both guys occasionally got the job done, but thanks guys, your services are no longer needed with the lead in the ninth.

Mike MacDougal is back in Kansas City to resume his role as closer after missing the first half of the season recovering from a strained muscle in his throwing shoulder. MacDougal suffered the injury during spring training pitching in a game against the Mariners. The Royals sent reliever Joe Nelson to AAA Omaha in order to make room on the roster for MacDougal.
